People & Feelings

Why do we have friends?

Why do we have friends?

Think of someone you love to play with. When you are together, the day feels lighter and laughter comes easily. That special person is a friend. But why do we have friends at all?

People feel happier together

Humans are made to live together, not alone. Way back, people stayed in groups to share food and keep each other safe. Today we do not hunt for dinner, but our hearts still love company. Being with a friend gives you a warm, happy feeling — and a problem feels only half as big when someone is beside you.

Friends play, help and share

A good friend does three lovely things. They play with you, so games are more fun. They help you when something is hard, like reaching a high shelf or feeling sad. And they share — toys, snacks, secrets and ideas. When you and a friend share, you both end up with more joy.

How to make a friend

Making friends is a skill you can learn! Be kind — a smile and a hello go a long way. Listen carefully when others talk, so they feel important. And share your turn and your things. Kind, listening, sharing people draw friends to them like flowers draw bees.

Wonder fact: Laughing together with a friend makes your brain release tiny “happy helpers” called endorphins — which is why giggling feels so good!
